Is hidden regulatory risk waiting to sink YOUR ship?

Electronics Recycling Regulatory and Data Security danger is often hidden from corporate leaders.

Corporations
like yours navigate treacherous waters with hidden icebergs waiting to sink your ships, and many times you don't even see them until it's too late.

That's because the Local, State and Federal regulators change the rules mid-game without your knowing, or because decision makers are more focused on growing their business, as they should be, and no one is telling them about the dangers ahead. If you don't know the facts about Data Destruction, Electronics Recycling and Corporate Asset Recovery, you could be sailing blindly into a sea of icebergs.

So what can you do?

First you are going to need to make sure that you are compliant with the most recent data destruction requirements and industry standards for your industry or vertical. This might mean something as strict as HIPAA requirements, or as simple as a NIST compliant standard wipe. This is where having someone who provides compliant data destruction services working with you, and on your side makes a huge difference. Someone that has done the due diligence and knows how to follow through can protect you from the horror and risk of failure to meet the increasingly higher bar of personal privacy and data security. Someone like STS Electronic Recycling.

And, if you have to watch it and verify with your very own eyes, a legitimate Recycler, like STS, will send out a truck with a shredder to your location, shred your hard drives and media on-site, and provide you a list of serial numbers right then, while they are there, so you know it was done right.

Second, you have to know what your exposure is to regulatory fines related to improper Electronics Recycling. It's not just computers and smart phones; its keyboards, mice, wires and any business related electronics devices that you dispose of. You will need to have confidence that when these items are entering the e-waste stream they are:

A.     Not going to the landfill or destined to be dumped illegally in developing countries;

B.     Scrubbed of any identifying markers or tags identifying your company, school or agency.

Not dumping the stuff you don't make money on is the big one here. Too many electronics recyclers take shortcuts. Less desirable items like old printers, copiers or CRT monitors end up dumped along the way because bad actors know there is going to be a cost to recycling them properly. At STS Electronic Recycling, we view properly recycling these less desirable items as just the price of doing business. A reputable electronics recycler isn't in it to make a quick buck, but are in for the long haul. Reputable recyclers know that their customers depend on them to dispose of their electronics the right way, and that's exactly what we do at STS. That's why thousands of customers all over the US have been trusting us to help manage their exposure and risk related to proper electronics recycling for over a decade.

Now to address point B. The electronic recycler you choose needs to have the respect, knowledge and foresight to remove all of your business' identifying markers from the devices they recycle for you. If they aren't doing that you should drop them immediately. You would be surprised by the sheer number of items that come into our facilities from other recyclers that have these identifying markers still attached. The privacy of our clients is something we take very seriously at STS Electronic Recycling and we will never divulge details about our clients without their consent. This includes identifying markers on the equipment we receive and send down stream to our audited network of recyclers and refurbishers. Simple.

Shameless plug below:

Ideally you would also need to find a recycler who can provide an Electronics Recycling Pick-up Service FREE of cost. STS Electronics Recycling provides free electronics recycling pick-up in your area, just give us a call at 844-699-2913 or shoot us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. Now on with the show:

Third and lastly, lets talk about financial icebergs. I'm talking about Corporate Asset Recovery and IT Asset Disposition. There is a specific class of asset that electronic recyclers will pay for. Not every electronics recycler will tell you this, but newer generation computers and laptops still carry value and when you divest of them you can leverage that value to lessen the blow of the cost of replacement. If your business or school wait until your IT Assets are old as dirt to make a move, then you could be missing the boat or headed for a financial iceberg. You WILL pay more for the replacements than you would have if you had only let go of them earlier, while their value was high.

Not everyone will be able to cycle their IT Assets early enough to recover any value, and for these customers a free recycling pick-up is just what the doctor ordered, and we always suggest looking into replacing these assets with refurbished units from online refurbishers like Discount Computer Depot (full disclosure: we work with those guys.)

Bottom line: Your school or business needs a qualified Electronics Recycler with the experience to help guide you through this sea of regulatory, privacy and financial related icebergs. Choose wisely, because choosing the wrong partner could be gambling with your organization's future.

STS Electronic Recycling is here, we want your business, and we have a decade of experience in providing safe, secure Electronics Recycling Services in a variety of industries just like yours.
